Some babies drink milk from a bottle instead of from their mom. This milk is called formula. It’s made special for babies to help them grow big and strong. Let’s learn how to feed a baby with formula!
Getting Ready
Before you make the formula:
- Wash your hands with soap and water.
- Make sure the bottle and all its parts are clean.
- Read the instructions on the formula can.
Making the Formula
- Use clean water. If you’re not sure, boil it first and let it cool.
- Put the right amount of water in the bottle.
- Add the right number of scoops of formula powder.
- Shake the bottle well to mix it up.
Feeding Time!
- Test the temperature: Put a few drops on your wrist. It should feel warm, not hot.
- Hold your baby close, in a half-sitting position.
- Tilt the bottle so the nipple and neck are full of milk.
- Let your baby suck on the nipple. Don’t force it!
- Take little breaks to burp your baby.
- Stop when your baby seems full. Don’t make them finish the bottle.
After Feeding
- Throw away any formula left in the bottle after one hour.
- Wash the bottle and all its parts with hot, soapy water.
- Let everything air dry.
Important Things to Remember
- Always check the date on the formula can. Don’t use old formula!
- Never microwave formula. It can heat unevenly and burn your baby’s mouth.
- Make fresh formula for each feeding. Don’t save it for later.
- Hold your baby while they eat. Don’t prop up the bottle.
Feeding your baby should be a special time. Talk softly and look into your baby’s eyes. This helps your baby feel loved and safe!
