Babies sleep a lot! It’s important to make sure they’re safe while they’re sleeping. Let’s learn about how to keep babies safe in their cribs and what SIDS is.
What is SIDS?
SIDS stands for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. It’s when a healthy baby dies in their sleep for no clear reason. It’s very rare, but very sad when it happens. The good news is that there are things we can do to help prevent SIDS!
Safe Sleep ABC’s
Remember the ABC’s of safe sleep:
- A is for Alone
- B is for Back
- C is for Crib
Let’s learn more about each of these:
A – Alone
Babies should sleep by themselves in their crib. Don’t put toys, blankets, or pillows in the crib with them. These things could cover their face and make it hard to breathe.
B – Back
Always put babies to sleep on their backs. This is the safest way for them to sleep. Babies who sleep on their tummies or sides are more likely to have trouble breathing.
C – Crib
Babies should sleep in a crib or bassinet. The mattress should be firm and flat. Use a fitted sheet that doesn’t come loose easily.
More Tips for Safe Sleep
- Keep the room cool but not cold. Dress your baby in light sleep clothes.
- Don’t let your baby get too hot. If you’re warm, your baby probably is too.
- Use a pacifier at bedtime if your baby likes it. This can help reduce the risk of SIDS.
- Don’t smoke around your baby or let others smoke near them.
- Breastfeed your baby if you can. Breastfed babies have a lower risk of SIDS.
- Make sure everyone who takes care of your baby knows these rules.
Tummy Time is Important Too!
While babies should always sleep on their backs, they need time on their tummies when they’re awake. This helps them get stronger. Always watch your baby during tummy time.
When to Call the Doctor
If you’re worried about your baby’s sleep or breathing, call your doctor. It’s always better to ask if you’re not sure!
Remember, these rules are for babies up to 1 year old. After that, babies can usually roll over by themselves and move around in their sleep.
By following these tips, you can help your baby sleep safely and reduce the risk of SIDS. Sweet dreams, little one!
